The Railroad Museum of Thessaly, that shelter at the first floor of the Railroad
Station of Volos, was built in 1882 by Evaristo De Kiriko on his architecture
designs. On the first floor , where there was the living place of the yardmaster
and donated as museum place after demands of the "Friends of Trains", exposures
items and official papers of the period, no longer in their functional use but
as little treasures from historical site.
One of the last new-classic buildings,
where neighbours with other social character buildings like the Town Hall,
Municipality Music Hall, Spirer Building, "Giorgio De Kiriko" Centre of Art, Municipal Theatre,
Library of the University of Thessaly, gains unique next in town planning. It
also works as a spiritual time machine, taking us emotionally to a period of
social, cultural, economy, commercial evolution that been connected with a new
one, the period of steam.
The statue of goddess Athena in combination with the
artistic signature of Evaristo De Kiriko, gives it a uniqueness that been
expressed by his convert into museum.

In this room we about to see files, rare photos, historical
documents, unique books and architecture designs of 19th century
railroads, papyrus photocopies and many others rare papers that
images the way of the railways through time. Works of Evaristo
De Kiriko and his co-workers, printed with water-color and penny,
consists artistic treasures. Stuffs like epoch uniforms, old
telegraphs, wooden and copper booking office, timers and station
clocks, machine spares and lights, all items were once had functional
use now take part as museum exhibits showing the human wisdom
and the effort for the improve of the life conditions and communications.
A season that leave touch of nostalgia to the olders and gives
a lesson to the youngers about the important role of the railroad
to the town improvement.
Museum is yet on baby steps but thanks
to the dutiful efforts of E. Melis and the members of the board
G.Antoniadis, A.Naris, N.Riga, G.Damigos, M.Karathanos, collect
more stuff and improves into a modern museum. Their wish is
the museum stays open to the public visitors and also be useful
as a place for events, speeches, lectures, projection on a screen
about railroads and anything else could play role in local
cultural facts. Events like the exhibition of Artistic Photography
with title "Pelion little train. On Evaristo's steps" in co-operation
with "Friends
of Trains", the gala with title "Thessalian Railroads - Giorgio
De Kiriko" that
combines with the official openings by the ex-mayor D.Pitsiori, the lecture
by the Professor of the University of Thessaly M.Harito with subject "The Museum
today. Modern tendencies to museum education elevate it as a cultural centre.
The intense for a library creation where the public have the chance to inform
about the history and the area of the railroads, the town and the relations
with Giorgio De Kiriko through the exhibition of his artistic work that includes
figures from the historical little train of Pelion, intend to the coming of
the greek and foreign friends of art.
In this work, the participation of each
one- simple citizens, public departments- is valuable so the civilization
and the straight of our city may show.
