FOLKLORIC CENTER OF KITSOS MAKRIS

The "FOLKLORIC CENTER OF KITSOS MAKRIS" accomodates
at the house of the folklorist in Volos city. Includes
his folklor collection, his library wich aparts from 4.000
toms of books and his record, with 2.500 transparencies
and 4.000 photos in many of them images treasures of greek
popular tradition no longer saved today.
After the death
of the folklorist and according of his wishes, the house
and all the aboves, donated by his family to the Library
of the University of Thessaly, were they manages them
preparative to co-stay in this building the Folkloric Center
and the Researh Center.
The house of Kitsos Makris , builded
in 1955 by designs of the architect Argiris Filippidis.

It's about a two-roof detached house , with 180 square metres
surface, wich approves characteristic example of house inspired
from the local traditional architect of Pelios, were the traditional
morfological matters re-creates and enters harmonically to the
modern creation.
On the floor
of the buildind, is the folkloric collection, the office of
the folklorist and the living-room and on the first floor are
the bedrooms and the toilletes. |
The folkloric collection includes about 560 items of
popular art , mostly becoming from the area of Pelion and
dates between 18o - 19o century. Some of the exhibits,
may concern as unique of their kind, as the great wall-print
of Pagonis, dates about 1832 and consists the main paint
subject of the out house of the stately Triantafyllou in
Drakia Pelion. Images cities and villages from the greek
area as Halkida, Talanti, Douko, etc.
Also unique, the
wallprints of Athanasios Pagonis, son of the latest,
becoming from his fatherly home in Drakia, dates about
1870 and images landscapes of the Thessalic valley.
Painting
of him is also the Rigas Feraios portait, one of the
most important popular portraits. |

Among the exhibits
of the collection, in special position are the 25 pieces
of art by the painter Theofilos Hatzimichail, who lived
in the area of Magnesia from the end of the last century
untill 1927,when he finally left for his homeland Mytilini.
Collection includes some of his most imporant paintings,
like "Neonimfi" , " Tris Kapetanaioi simfiliothentes" , "O
heretismos tou Mai" ,and also painting of his own with
most important the painting "Panagia Vrefokratousa"
His own position in this collection, holds the last
of the folkloric painters of the area, Nikolaos Hristopoulos,
(1880- -1967), with 16 paintings of his, images his characteristic
ships and others, mostly navy matters.
Particular interesting
is the collection of paper icons, were they prints by
copper matrix (chalcographia) in the labs of Agio Oros,
and spare them by the monks on their tours. Folkloric collection
completes with after-visantium icons and small-art objects
, like carvens, characteristic samples of church art,
daily-use objects, ceramics, music instruments and plenty
of objects covering the spectrum of popular art. |

The office area ,small but full of books ,photos and
images of the past, has been the favourite place for work
and creation for the folklorist, that's why they choose
to maintain the look and the character that Kitsos Makris
gave to his own space.
Living room , has the look of Pelioritikou "doxatou",
with the carven datails of the 18o century taken from Bantis
house in Drakia, that been demolitioned. Of the surround
area of the roof, painted details from Volos and Pelion,
made by the folklorist "...not as the eyes see them,but
as Kitsos Makris have them in his heart...".There ,is
also the the glass-case, mentioning the life and work
of Kitsos Makris, including his private objects, images
from his life, his author play and his honorary excellences. |
