STUDIES - CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT
The aim of the site you shall visit is to focus on cultural
heritage as evident in Volos. It was created due to the forthcoming creation
of three new cultural places in Volos: the museum of industrial heritage at the
Tsalapatas brick factory, the City museum and the museum of the Argonauts. These
three new museums will house in future cultural events and highlight the historical
values of exhibits depicting findings from different areas in Volos and surroundings.
At the same a cultural calendar will provide information about cultural events
and facilitate thereby cultural planning.Objects originating fron the famous
prehistoric sites of Dimini and Sesklo illustrate the neolithic cultures which
grew up at the innermost recess of the Pagasetic Gulf and Thessaly. Clay statuettes
and utensils of the geometric period shed light on the times which are related
of in the legends of the Expedition of the Argonauts and Homer's epics.In Volos
Archaeological Museum, a neoclassical building dating from 1907, are displayed
Sculpure from the classical period and rare jointed statuettes side by side with
reliefs of the Alexandrine period from Demetrias. The popular painter Theophilos
worked ίη Volos and the villages of Μt. Pelion from the end of the last century
until the 1930's, continuing a long tradition ίη the decoration of churches and
mansions and creating many important works art. He was "discovered" ίη
1935 by the modern painter Gounaropoulos who later decorated the church of the
Holy Τrίnίty (Agia Triada) which is situated οη the seafront close to the Volos
hospital. Around the time that Theophilos arrived ίη Volos, the city was also
the birthplace of another great artist of world-wide fame Giorgio De Chirico
