MUSEUM
OF ARGONAUTIC EXPEDITION - Planning
|
| |
The park of Pedion Areos, despite the interesting landscape
with an artificial lake and an islet , the plants and Jockey
Club, the railway line and the restaurants - coffee bars, has
a reduced functional space development. |
The park functions as a borderline between the operations
of the port and those of the city, but does not have
direct functional relation with the regions of Neapoli,
so as to be developed as a relaxation area for local
residents. On the other hand, it does not offer operations
capable to attract residents or visitors, so as an interesting
area of the city to remain substantially unexploited.
In the last years the city turns its developmental direction
into tourism, trying to make known and show its rich historical
heritage, its handicraft and industrial tradition and its
unique cultural movement and artistic life. |
|
 |
|
Aim of the Municipality is the exploitation and distinction
of its abilities and of the city's cultural heritage and the
creation of proper substructure for the development of tourism
with sightseeing and activities which will attract visitors
of the whole region in Volos and capable to develop a new potential
for tourism aiming at the city itself.
|
This proposal consists of the following projects: |
| |
COSMORAMA
|
Is an arched projection room of 18 meters diameter , at
an inclination of 23,5 degrees compared to the horizontal level
which can accommodate 175 comfortable seats in amphitheatrically
order. The room is perimetrical surrounded by the necessary
waiting and access room for the public as well as by the necessary
helping areas.
The dome constitutes the projection area for special digital
movies with a 6 projectors' system which cover the hemisphere,
creating a spectacular scene for the audience. The modern digital
surround systems which support the projection, also, create
for the audience a feeling of attendance in the scene that
is presented.
The issues of virtual reality films which will be projected
at Cosmorama come from science, functioning as a modern Planetarium
but also as a scientific and technological centre, and on the
other hand from history and culture, with priority in the projection
of history of the region.
Cosmorama as a unique place in Central Greece is expected
to considerably increase the school tourism and to be added
in the city's sightseeing, functioning from its architecture,
as a reference point identified with the modern appearance
of Volos. |

MUSEUM OF ARGONAUTIC EXPEDITION |

|
|
The fable of Jason and Argonauts who departed
from ancient Iolkos to Kolchida searching for the Golden
Fleece, still remains worldwide the most famous reference
to Volos. Nevertheless, the priceless historical heritage
of Argonautic Expedition nowadays, remains invisible
for the visitor and unexploited for the ambitions of
the city concerning its acknowledgement and visitors'
attraction. The creation of the Museum of Argonautic
Expedition aims to the formation of a modern reference
place regarding the fable, with the objective of cultural
tourism development and the creation of another visitors'
attraction pole in Volos. |
|
The Museum consists of exhibition and projection rooms and
of educational rooms for children, on the basis of the following
subjects:
- Argonautic expedition - the fable and its explanations.
- Ancient Iolkos - References to the fable and findings in
the area.
- The journey : Development of relations and contacts with
the countries of Euxine Pontus .
- The fable of Argonautic Expedition as an international
inspiration source through the centuries: literature, formative
arts, cinema.
For the growth of interest and visitations and with the growth
of documentation and the enrichment of the collection of the
Museum, is proposed the integration of use of modern interactive
technologies and virtual reality.
The area is completed with a souvenir shop. |

CONSTRUCTION OF ARGO |
The attempt for the construction of Argo has already
begun under the initiative of Volos Municipal Enterprise
for Tourism and research and preparation of the project
is conducted by a special scientific group.
The research attempt is expected to provide historical
documentation and all necessary evidence for this type
of ship and construction techniques during the historical
period that Argo was built, so as to be rebuilt under
the same methods.
Construction process is planned to take place at the old
shipyard of Pefkakia and will be an important local event
which will gain publicity while documentation and filming
of the ship-building will be valuable document for the
future. |
|
 |
|
The aim is new Argo to travel to Kolchida and Euxine Pontus
opening a new perspective in cultural, social and economical
relations with the countries of Black Sea. |
| |
DOCKYARD OF ARGO
|

|
|
Dockyard , which is the place where Argo was put in
after the journey , is planned at Pedion Areos , near
the lake and Museum of Argonautic Expedition .
Covered area will provide appropriate conditions for ship
' s maintenance and the ability for visitors to visit the
ship and be informed for its construction. |
|
| |
ARGO SAILS |
A replica of the Argo, a mythical Greek ship believed to have sailed 3,000 years on a heroic quest from Greece to modern-day Georgia, set sail Sunday from the port of Volos on a trial run.
Built with Bronze Age tools to the specifications of a Mycenaean-era vessel, the 28.5 meter (93 foot) wooden ship sailed into the waters of the Pagasitic Gulf - the legendary expedition's original starting point - after a four-year construction period.
According to Greek legend, the expedition headed by Jason and featuring some 50 other heroes - including Hercules and Peleus, the father of Achilles - sailed to the Black Sea kingdom of Colchis on a mission to retrieve the Golden Fleece, the skin of a divine ram. |

REFORMATION OF MYTHOLOGICAL PARK |
 |
The proposal is completed with the reformation of Pedion
Areos park and its functioning exploitation by the creation
of a thematic mythological park which fills in previous substructures
, offering a relaxation area inspired from local mythology
.
Thematic parks abroad operate for many years with great success
and financial benefits for their organizers. Planning a thematic
park requires important preliminary work and study so as to
offer a complete tourist attraction and a modern cultural proposal
which will provoke visitors' interest as well as the interest
of private initiatives for its additional finance and operation.
Expected results from the implementation of this proposal
are multilateral with significant and multiplicative effects
in local development. Proper substructure will increase long
lasting tourism in Volos city regarding similar centers of
tourist attraction (Tsalapatas brick factory, Museum of History
of the city). As a result, investing activities in tourism
are expected to be encouraged and increased. At the same time, emphasis in the usage of new technologies of
created substructures is expected, in combination with similar
suggested actions for new technology promotion, to create all
requirements for the new generation to know and be accustomed
to new technology applications and the growth of new employment
opportunities at the creative part of multimedia and virtual
reality. |
